data driven operational excellence

The significance of data within our businesses has always been acknowledged, but the ongoing advancements in both computing power and tools like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI and ML) are catapulting it to the forefront of operational excellence discussions. That said, there are two critical challenges that businesses face today and well into the future when it comes to leveraging data to its fullest potential: those being data integrity and data governance.

Understanding Data Integrity and Governance

  • Data Integrity: Think of data integrity as making sure our data is accurate, reliable, and remains the way it’s supposed to. Imagine you’re playing a game where you need to keep track of your scores accurately. If your score gets mixed up or changed incorrectly, it wouldn’t be fair, right? That’s what data integrity is about – ensuring the data is correct, consistent, and doesn’t get tampered with. It’s like making sure the game scores are always right, so everyone knows what’s actually going on.
  • Data Governance: Data governance is different in the sense that it’s a bit broader. It’s like the rulebook for how we handle all the data in our company. This includes who can see or change the data, how we store it, and what we’re allowed to do with it. It’s like the rules we play by during a game to make sure everything is fair and organized. Data governance helps us to make sure that the data is used properly, safely, and effectively.

Levels of Data Maturity

The easiest way to think about our data today and into the future is through a data maturity model. This not only helps us to identify where we’re at but creates a pathway for improvement. I’ve found that the Department of Labor Office of Data Governance has a great resource that walks through an accepted Data Management Maturity Model. This model categorizes our data capabilities into five levels, from the most basic to optimized:

  1. Level 1 (Ad Hoc): At this stage, data processes are unstructured, locally managed, and lack enterprise-wide coordination. They’re based on whatever existing resources and tools are available without respect to what anyone else in the enterprise does.
  2. Levels 2 to 4: These intermediate stages represent the progressive structuring, standardization, and integration of data processes across our organization.
  3. Level 5 (Optimized): The highest level of data maturity, where data processes are fully optimized, automated, standardized, and aligned across our entire enterprise.

Moving from Data-Driven to Decision-Driven

While many organizations say they are both data mature and data-driven, when we dig deeper, we often uncover a different reality. Regardless of where we’re at today, we need to shift our thinking from simply being data-driven to being decision-driven. It’s a slight shift that emphasizes the quality and relevance of data over the quantity of it. Capturing excessive data without a clear understanding of the needed insights can not only overwhelm decision-makers but slow if not stop the agility of an organization. Our focus needs to be on actionable data – information that directly informs and influences strategic decisions, enhancing operational efficiency and driving sustainable growth.

Final Thoughts

As we head towards the future of operational excellence, it’s clear that data will play a critical role. But remember, it’s not just about having data; it’s about having the right data, governed properly, and managed with integrity, to drive informed, insightful decisions. By advancing through a maturity model, we can leverage the real power of our data, transforming it into a critical asset that is the foundation of strategic decision-making and operational success.

That’s it for today.

See you all again next week!
