Empathy and Emotional Intelligence in Leadership

Gone are the days where leadership is a one-way street. Not that it doesn’t exist because it certainly does but what I’ve learned is that if we can’t embrace empathy and emotional intelligence, we will struggle to create sustainable growth.

Early in my leadership journey, I definitely took the traditional approach. Mostly because that’s how I learned, but it became clear, pretty quickly that “command and control” was a limiting approach. Real change began to happen when I stepped down from the pedestal and started to listen — really listen — to the people driving our day-to-day operations.

This shift from authority to empathy didn’t just nudge us forward — it catapulted us to two ‘Most Improved Plant’ awards with two different businesses, has delivered numerous improvements with other businesses I have been a part of, and continues to influence my approach to change management consulting today.

Leveraging Collective Brainpower

This is something I emphasize often because I’ve learned it’s crucial for sustainable success. The moment we started tapping into the collective brainpower of our team was the moment we began seeing what we were truly capable of accomplishing. By giving them the space to articulate obstacles and propose solutions, not only did our efficiency increase, but so did their sense of ownership.

Don’t get me wrong, as leaders it’s still our responsibility to set the goals and provide the bounds. But when we invite our teams into the problem-solving process, when we genuinely consider their insights, we don’t just reach our targets—we often surpass them, and generally much faster than we ever thought possible.

Emotional Intelligence in Action

One of my favorite books of the last few years is “Twelve and a Half” by Gary Vaynerchuk. Gary dives deep into embedding emotional skills in leadership and provides a simple framework that resonated with me and what I’ve seen play out in real life leadership. The book both teaches and inspires plus I appreciate Gary’s practical approach to reinforce each one of the lessons.

I’m such a fan of this book and believe it should be on every leader’s bookshelf that I have some extra copies… if you want one, I’ll send you one for free! Just send an email to dave@thecryslerclub.com with your physical address and I’ll get it out to you.

Cultivating a Magnet for Talent and Continuous Improvement

Top talent doesn’t just look for a great place to work—they seek a space where they feel heard, understood, and appreciated. They flourish when their contributions are not only recognized but are instrumental in driving change. This is the magic of leadership that leans on empathy and emotional intelligence—it doesn’t just grow a business, it grows people. And as people grow, so does their loyalty, their drive to innovate, and their commitment to the collective mission of the organization. This kind of culture is what creates a true continuous improvement environment.

Final Thoughts

The transformative power of empathy and emotional intelligence in leadership can’t be overstated. These aren’t just soft skills; they’re the bedrock of a better leadership model—one that values heart and insight as much as decision-making and direction. It’s clear to me that our ability to genuinely connect and understand our teams isn’t just nice to have; it’s exactly what will drive us to new heights together.

As we look toward the future, we should embrace the knowledge that the strongest leaders will be those who see their role not just as managers of tasks, but as cultivators of potential. Let’s commit to this path, not just because it’s buzzworthy, but because it works.

That’s it for today.

See you all again next week!
